Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen has dropped a huge hint that he will be joining Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The Belgian international has been constantly linked with a move to north London, with rivals Arsenal and Tottenham reportedly tussling for the defender's signature.

Vertonghen scooped the Dutch Golden Boot, given to the Eredivisie Player of the Year, after an outstanding campaign in the centre of Ajax's title winning back four, but he admits his future now lies in the Premier League.

Vertonghen appears favorite to join Spurs.

"I owe much to Ajax, I have always given my whole heart and soul for them. My appreciation for the club and the fans is great," said Vertonghen.

"It would be terrible if my departure would be a long and distorted situation as Ajax would keep asking for a great price 'till the bone'.

"Of course I want Ajax to become financially better, but the amount Tottenham are willing to pay, maybe with a little bit extra, is very reasonable.

"In a year from now I could leave the club for free. I want to flow in fluently, directly with the other Spurs players.

"Tottenham is a fantastic traditional club who play football in a way I like.

"Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive-minded players."

Vertonghen will hope to spearhead a back-four which has been littered with injury problems this season.

Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Younes Kaboul and William Gallas have all spent time on the sidelines this season, constant changes which have affected not only the club's attempts to win the Premier League title, but also to hold on to a Champions League spot.

They face Fulham on the last day of the season knowing if they slip up, a win for Newcastle United could see fourth spot snatched away, while Arsenal are also in the final day shake up, as they face West Bromwich Albion in Roy Hodgson's final game as manager.

Manager Harry Redknapp will be hoping he can make further additions to his squad in time for the new season, when a European campaign can be combined with another attempt to break the Manchester stranglehold at the Premier League's summit.
