Adam Johnson will miss England's first World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Friday because of a thigh injury.

The winger has 11 England caps and joined Sunderland from champions Manchester City last month.

Johnson joins a list of high profile players out of action for the match, including Wayne Rooney, Andy Carroll and Ashley Cole.

Zenit St Petersburg's assault of the transfer market is in no sign of stopping as Talksport reports they are lining up a £25m bid for Manchester United winger Nani.

The British transfer window might be shut, but the Russian one remains open for a few more days, allowing the mega-rich side to add to the £64m they have already splashed out on Brazil striker Hulk and Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel.

Nani has yet to start a game for United after their opening day defeat against Everton, and with fellow midfielders Shinji Kagawa, Antonio Valencia and Tom Cleverley impressing so far, Ferguson might consider cashing in on the Portugal international.

Volatile midfielder Joey Barton is currently catching the Mediterranean sun whilst on loan at French club Marseille, but now reports have emerged that another French club tried to snatch the player at the last moment. The Metro says that Lyon tried to land the midfielder from QPR, only for his criminal record to put off the club sponsors. The 30 year old is currently serving a 12 game ban after violently lashing out against various Manchester City players on the last day of the season, meaning that we won't see him play for Marseille until November.
