Kate Middleton has proved she can maintain a fine balance between her royal life and her life in the public eye, or at least the one seen through the lens of the paparazzi.

Amid the ongoing row over a picture of the Duchess of Cambridge flashing her bare bottom, an all-smiling Kate stepped out of the palace afresh to visit Scotland.

The revealing shot, which has been published online by German tabloid Bild as well as by Sydney Daily Telegraph, was taken when wind from the helicopter blew up Kate's dress as she arrived in the Blue Mountains area along with the Duke during their royal tour of Australia and New Zealand in April.

Brushing aside the hullabaloo over her bare bottom picture, the 32-year-old Catherine on Thursday attended her first public engagement since the completion of the royal tour.

This was also William and Kate's first engagement together since they returned from the tour.

Kate Middleton seemed to show no signs of distress because of the picture as she visited Scotland.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, known as The Earl and Countess of Strathearn in Scotland, attended several engagements in Perth and Kinross.

The royal couple attended the Forteviot village fete in Strathearn and made a visit to Strathearn Community Campus at Crieff.

William and Kate also visited the country's oldest distillery in Glenturret where they enjoyed whisky tasting.

Kate appeared to enjoy every bit of the day trip as she amused children by making funny faces when they asked for a photo.

Dressed in a chic scarlet pencil dress by Goat and a striped coat of the same colour from Jonathan Saunders' Fall/Winter 2013 collection, the Duchess looked an elegant royal as she completed her look with her favourite L.K. Bennett nude heels.
