Katherine Jenkins and her fiancé, Gethin Jones, have ended their relationship just six months before their wedding was due to take place.

The Welsh classical singer and Jones, a children's television presenter, called off their 11-month engagement and will go their separate ways after spending four years together.

The 31-year-old mezzo-soprano broke the news to her fans on Twitter. "Sorry for being quiet of late, its just that I have some very sad news. Geth & I have decided to go our separate ways," she tweeted.

"We are both beyond broken hearted. All your hugs & support will be much appreciated xxx."

Her 33-year-old ex confirmed the split on the site, where he tweeted: "I'm deeply sad to tell you that Kath and I have ended our relationship as a couple. We are both heart broken... Gx."

They started dating in 2007 after meeting on the set of BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing and became engaged in January 2011 after Jones proposed to the singer with a £10,000 diamond ring on a boat in Mexico. They share a £4.7 million home in Richmond, southwest London.

Although the reason behind the split remains unknown, there have been rumours of the couple growing apart.

Friends of Jones reportedly claimed that Jenkins' demanding career had made it difficult for them to spend quality time together
