It was another night of thrilling League Cup action as Chelsea prevailed 5-4 against Manchester United. Following on from controversial refereeing decisions and accusations against official Mark Clattenburg of racial abuse, thankfully Wednesday clash at Stamford Bridge focused firmly on the football.

United were in charge at half time after Ryan Giggs and Javier Hernandez had scored either side of a David Luiz penalty. Gary Cahill brought things level after the break, before a goal from Nani saw United on the verge of replicating Sunday's score line against the Blues. This time United's young defence was exposed as a push from Scott Wootton on Ramires in the dying seconds, allowed Eden Hazard to equalise for Chelsea from the spot.

In extra time Ramires and Sturridge both bagged goals before the Blues, leaving Gigg's penalty in the 120th minute only a consolation goal.

The win will go some way to restoring Chelsea' confidence after defeat in the Premier League against United at the weekend. The Blues were joined last night by Norwich and Swansea in the quarter finals, after The Canaries beat Tottenham 2-1, and the Swans beat Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield.
