The UK arm of the German discount supermarket chain Lidl has recalled Nixe branded canned herring products on Saturday, 30 April, because they may include fish. A notice posted by the British Food Standards Agency says that the canned fish might include undeclared ingredients that "could result in a possible health risk".

The food safety agency has said the Nixe products may include "fish, milk, egg, mustard and wheat (gluten)" ingredients "which are not mentioned in English on the label".

Most of the Nixe products have more than one undeclared allergen, but the Herring Fillets in Tomato Sauce's only undeclared allergen is "fish". Customers who have bought the product can take it to their nearest Lidl store for a full refund.

All of the Nixe products affected have a best before date of 16 March 2020. The recalled tins also weigh 200g.

The Herring Fillets in a Tomato & Pepper Sauce have undeclared mustard and fish; the Herring Fillets in a Mustard Sauce have undeclared egg, wheat (gluten) and mustard, and fish; and the Herring Fillets in a Tomato and Red & Green Pepper Sauce has undeclared milk and fish.

Lidl said that other supermarkets are not affected by the recall and customers with concerns can contact customer services on 0370 444 1234.

Full details of the products effected by the recall are available on the Food Standards Agency website.
