Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has indicated the club's activity in the summer transfer window is over after claiming the Merseysiders have achieved all of their objectives set by manager Brendan Rodgers.

Twenty-one players have come and gone from the Reds this summer, with Christian Benteke's arrival from Aston Villa the highest profile addition, while Raheem Sterling has joined Manchester City to become the most expensive English footballer in history.

The acrimonious exit of Sterling threatened to overshadow Liverpool's summer business but Ayre claims the club are delighted with their summer work – a hint their movement this summer could be at an end.

"We set out our plan with Brendan at the start of the summer and some of the objectives that the manager wanted to achieve and we have achieved all of them," he told Sky Sports News, according to the Liverpool Echo.

"We're pretty pleased with the way the summer has gone and it has been kind to us this year. It's interesting, we have not done anything any differently to previous years; sometimes the cards fall in your favour and sometimes they don't and we're very pleased with the outcome."

Despite Liverpool being content with their recruitment drive, former defender Mark Lawrenson has urged the club to consider signing a full-back to cover for Alberto Moreno. The defender endured a difficult first season in English football after signing from Sevilla and was often switched between left-back and left-wing back during a unsettled first term at Anfield. But Lawrenson wants back-up to the Spaniard, with Jose Enrique seemingly out of favour under Rodgers.

"Liverpool need a new left-back. There were some rumours knocking around last week that Barcelona were sniffing around Alberto Moreno," he told the Liverpool Echo. "I'd be surprised if they want to take the Spaniard, given how, since the new year, he has been really, really struggling for form."

"Moreno started the season well after coming in from Sevilla and scored that fine goal at White Hart Lane, but it all fell apart in the second half of the season. Worryingly, quite often he has looked a little boy lost in the big games. Moreno deserves another chance. But we need more competition in his position, because it's clear Brendan Rodgers no longer has any real faith in Jose Enrique."
