Pepe Reina is unlikely to ever play for Liverpool again after reports emerged suggesting that the Spanish goalkeeper has agreed to join Barcelona next summer.

The 31 year old was heavily linked with a return to his boyhood club this summer but no deal was forthcoming after Victor Valdes agreed to remain with the La Liga champions for one more season.

Reina has since joined Serie A side Napoli on a season long-loan after it became clear that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers wanted summer signing Simon Mignolet to be his number one this season.

Reports in the Spanish press suggest that Reina has already agreed to move to Barcelona next summer where he would likely be a direct replacement for his international colleague Valdes.

Reina still has three years remaining on his Liverpool contract but it I unlikely that he would want to return to the club and play second fiddle to Mignolet, especially after so many successful years at Anfield as the number one.

The Metro reports that Barcelona were initially interested in Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is currently in his third season on loan at Athletico Madrid, but the Belgian has stated that he wants to fight for his place at Stamford Bridge.

Reina would certainly seem a logical choice for Barcelona as the Spain international came through the youth system at the Catalan club and remains good friends with several of the Spanish players in the first team.

The former Villarreal stopper had eight impressive seasons at Liverpool before joining Napoli, winning the Premier League Golden Glove award on three occasions.

He kept a total of 134 Premier League clean sheets at Liverpool but last season came under some criticism after making some uncharacteristic mistakes.

Reina would find his best form in the second half of the season but did admit at the end of the campaign that he was flattered to learn of Barcelona's interest.
