Mamadou Sakho's latest comments will have alerted Liverpool after the Paris Saint-Germain defender suggested that he may be forced to consider his future if he is not first choice in defence.

The 23-year-old came through the PSG academy and was voted the Ligue 1 young player of the year in 2011. He was captain of the France Under-21 side and has since secured a regular place in the senior side's squad under Didier Deschamps.

Despite appearing for France on seven occasions this season, Sakho is worried that a lack of playing time will harm his chances of being in the France squad next year.

With the potential of playing in his first World Cup, Sakho clearly wants reassurances from Carlo Ancelotti that he will be first choice next season. However, this may be difficult as the Italian has often preferred the Brazilian pairing of Alex and Thiago Silva.

Sky Sports reports that Liverpool are believed to be interested in signing the powerful defender as they look to find a replacement for the retiring Jamie Carragher.

Should Brendan Rodgers be seriously looking at signing Sakho then he will have been interested to hear the latest comments from the centre-back.

"In the mind of the PSG coach, I'm the third (in the pecking order of central defenders)," said Sakho, as quoted on Sky Sports. "I finally come to accept it even if I do not understand it.

"I have to play at club level to qualify for the France team. Next season will be important. It's been a difficult year and a half for me at PSG. To continue my progress, I must be playing."

Sakho is under contract at the Parc des Princes until the summer of 2014 and has started 18 Liguie 1 games this season. However, with PSG continually spending huge sums of money of improving their squad it has been difficult for some of French players to hold down a place in the first team.

Jeremy Menez and Kevin Gameiro have both fallen out of favour and must compete with the likes of Lucas Moua, Zalatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Javier Pastore for a place in the starting XI.

With Brendan Rodgers making it clear that he wants to sign a defender in the summer the promise of first team football could well help convince Sakho to make the move.
