Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that his side will not spend big in January, in spite of suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of newly promoted Hull City.

Rodgers' side have been in great form so far and are currently fourth in the league, having once led the table amid competition from Arsenal, Chelsea and the Manchester clubs.

Their performance has been down to the brilliance of their attacking duo of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez who have scored more than 15 goals together in the league and are regarded among the best partnerships to ever grace the Premier League era.

However, an injury to Sturridge has threatened to keep him out of action for up to eight weeks, giving Rodgers a real headache ahead of a congested fixture list in December. Suarez is their lone striker up front with Iago Aspas as backup. However, the Spaniard has failed to hit the ground running following his much anticipated move from Celta Vigo last summer, but Rodgers has stressed that he will not break the bank to cover for Sturridge's absence.

"The thing for me is trying to maximise the players we have got. There's no hiding from the fact we spent money to get players in; now they will get the chance to perform. We tried to get a host of players in who could improve us but that didn't materialise. A lot of work went into it. What is the case is we are not in a position to spend money for the sake of it," Rodgers said.

Their 3-1 defeat to Hull City was only their third this season, following losses to Southampton and Arsenal. A win against Norwich will take them second in the table but Rodgers is more focussed on getting his team to gel again and hope that such mishaps do not recur in the near future. The Reds are planning a top four finish this season and need consistent performances from their best players if they have to realise their dream.
