Jose Mourinho wants to sign Xabi Alonso if the manager makes the move to Chelsea in the summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Alonso has made it clear that he will consider offers to leave the Spanish giants come the end of the season, and Liverpool have often been mentioned as a possible destination for the Spaniard given he spent five highly successful years on Merseyside.

Alonso has remained tight-lipped over the possibility of making a return to the Reds, and now reports suggest Chelsea are ready to battle Liverpool to sign him in the summer transfer window.

Xabi Alonso could be headed for Chelsea, rather than Liverpool in the summer.

Mourinho's future is currently up in the air, particularly after Madrid were ousted from the Champions League semi final by Borussia Dortmund this week.

Mourinho has said he will go where he is loved, and singled out England as a possible destination. He has long been connected to a return to Stamford Bridge, though it remains to be seen whether Roman Abramovich would take back the coach he famously fell out with in 2007.

Should he head to a club in England, the manager with two Champions League trophies to his name will no doubt have a transfer wishlist to bring with him.

Alonso most recently said that he hopes to stay in Madrid, but also admitted that nothing is clear over his future. He has spoken highly of his time at Liverpool, and since the 31-year-old left the club in 2009 they have been on a downward spiral from Champions League regulars to mid-table finishers.

Chelsea are currently fighting for a top four place and have had a disappointing season, which reached its nadir when they were ousted from the Champions League in the group stages.

The west London club will be looking to seriously boost their squad in the summer with or without Mourinho on board, and Alonso could provide the leadership that will be missing if Frank Lampard does indeed depart.
