Shares in British banks were broadly up on the FTSE 100 in morning trading ahead of economic data from the US.

At 13:30 British time the US will release its consumer prices data for August.

By 09:25 shares in Lloyds Banking Group were up 0.84 per cent to 76.96 pence per share, RBS shares increased 1.61 per cent to 49.22 pence per share and HSBC shares rose 0.70 per cent to 680.10 pence per share.

Barclays shares however, were down 0.22 per cent to 314.05 pence per share.

Overall the FTSE 100 was up 1.13 per cent to 5,602.71.
