Great Britain celebrated their first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympics as Helen Glover and Heather Stanning cruised to victory in the women's pair and the rest of Team GB was quick to show their support.
There are some 331 member of Team GB currently on the social networking site Twitter and it has become a superb forum for the athletes to comment on the London Games.
The British team has consistently taken to Twitter to show their support and there were numerous messages posted throughout the 2000m race as Glover and Stanning moved well clear of the rest of the field to secure their place in history.
"This is looking good.... 500m to go.. COME ON!!!!!! [sic]" tweeted one of Britain's most decorated Olympians Sir Chris Hoy who will be in action in the team sprint on Thursday.
"Omg Glover & Stanning smashing it. Surely secured the gold! #GoGB" commented steeplechaser Barbara Parker who will be competing in both the 3000m and 5000m event.
As the duo crossed the finishing line to land a historic first gold medal of the Games for Team GB, there was a whole host of messages as athletes from a whole range of sports offered their congratulations to the rowers.
"Wow!!!!!! Gold medal for the Womens pair!! Congratulations!!! Amazing result!! #teamGB #rowing #OurGreatestTeam," declared another medallist in Rebecca Adlington who claimed bronze to win our second medal of the London Olympics.
"Woooooohooo Glover and Stanning rowing GOLD !!! Amazing work ladies!" added medal hope Victoria Pendleton, while the pair's fellow rower Mark Hunter said: "GOLD for heather and helen whoo hoo. @TeamGB First Gold Medal #GoldFever time has started!!!! Amazing Amazing."
"Just watched GB win gold oooooooosh haha medical room was buzzing [sic]" revealed another medallist Louis Smith who was part of the men's gymnastics team which claimed a bronze medal two days ago.
The praise continued to pour in when Stanning and Glover received their gold medals on the banks of Eton Torney.
"Very proud to be watching #Heather&Helen receiving their olympic GOLD medals! Great moment for GB #London2012," said Alex Gregory, a member of men's rowing team who will be hoping to match their success.
"Almost crying watching this medal ceremony !!!" added Lynsey Sharp who will be in action next week in the 800m and summed up what the vast majority of Team GB members would have been feeling.
It is the first Olympic Games were we have had so much access to the competitors with the social network platform and there is sure to be plenty of support and words of congratulations adoring the site in the days to come.
