Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is reportedly set to splurge £125m to land his priority summer transfer targets.

According to the Express, The Red Devils boss is planning a complete overhaul of the squad and is willing to splash the cash to land his top three targets Arturo Vidal, Angel Di Maria and Mehdi Benatia.

United have already brought in Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera and it now looks like the Dutchman has gone into overdrive to complete his transfer business before the start of the Premier League season.

The Vidal transfer saga has been going back and forth throughout the summer, but it is believed that United are close to capturing the midfield enforcer and are even willing to let Mexican striker Javier Hernandez move the other way as part of the deal.

However, the race for Real winger Di Maria, was more complicated and it looked like United were beaten to the Argentine's signature by Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, with reports claiming that a move was imminent. But, the president of the French club later admitted that the player was too expensive and PSG had stopped negotiating with the Spanish capital club.

This has now put the Old Trafford club in pole position to land the Argentine international's services and have supposedly submitted a bid in the region of £55m.

With Van Gaal prioritising the defensive department as being one of the key areas he is looking to strengthen during the transfer window, they have been linked to various defenders. Following the disappointment of losing long time target Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, the United manager seems to have turned his attention to Roma defender Benatia, who is available for £30m.

However, United are not the only club interested and will face stiff competition from Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, who are also in the market for a central defender.
