These photos show people in the western Ukrainian village of Krasnoilsk celebrating the winter festival of Malanka.

The holiday, which involves dressing in elaborate costumes and going from house to house singing traditional songs, is celebrated on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day in the Julian calendar.

Getty Images photographer Brendan Hoffman travelled to Krasnoilsk, near the Romanian border, to join in the celebrations.
