A teenager from London has been sentenced to eight years in prison for stabbing to death British soldier David Lee Collins at a holiday resort in Cyprus.

The 19-year-old Fusilier was fatally wounded in a nightclub brawl in the party town of Ayia Napa in November. Off duty with three other soldiers, he was due to fly out to Afghanistan the following day.

His attacker Mohammed Osman, also 19, admitted manslaughter and was sentenced to an eight-year term, at a court in Larnaca. He had originally pleaded not guilty, but later admitted stabbing the soldier in the chest. His lawyer said he had since apologised to Mr Collins' family.

The nightclub is in an area popular with British holidaymakers, but which is out of bounds to soldiers stationed on the island due to past incidents of violence. Some 3,000 British soldiers are reside on the two military bases on the island.
