The heroics of Rooney and De Gea was not enough as Manchester United were outclassed by Athletic Bilbao in their own backyard, losing 3-2 to the visitors in their Europa League round of sixteen first leg clash.

Although Manchester United took an early lead in the 22nd minute via a goal from Rooney, the visitors, after attacking continuously, soon found an equaliser through Spanish striker Fernando Llorente in the dying minutes of the first half.

The second half was dominated by the Spaniards, who finally took the lead in the 72nd minute through their 22-year-old Spanish forward Oscar de Marcos.

United's fate was sealed when Muniain, Athletic's top scorer this season, managed to net the ball past De Gea, who had just saved another Oscar shot.

United's hopes were briefly lifted when Rooney found the back of Athletic net via a penalty in added time, but the Spaniards managed to cling on to their one goal lead.
