Chris Smalling and Timothy Fosu-Mensah have been omitted from the squad for Manchester United's friendly against Galatasaray in Sweden due to injury, club's manager Jose Mourinho confirmed. The team are preparing for their final pre-season game in Gothenburg, with summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic expected to make his debut for the club on Saturday (30 July).

"Fosu-Mensah is not so much injured. But he has this little thing that we want to be careful with given that he is young. He is separate from the group until he is 100 per cent back," Mourinho told United's official site.

"Chris Smalling has had a recurrence of an old injury from the previous season. We shall see what happens, but already he is suspended for the first game against Bournemouth," the Portuguese coach said.

Smalling is yet to make an appearance during pre-season and is unlikely to do so after the Portuguese manager confirmed that he would miss their opening Premier League clash against Bournemouth on 14 August. His injury is a source of worry for the manager, who is looking to add an experienced defender to the squad despite signing Eric Bailly from Villarreal earlier in the summer.

Fosu-Mensah on the other hand, has featured for the Red Devils this summer, when he played the first-half during United's 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

The versatile defender is highly-rated at the club and will return to training with the first-team once he is fully fit. Meanwhile, a Times report on Thursday (28 July) suggested that he would leave the club on loan this season, but his agent Jonathan Barnett rubbished claims of a proposed move away.
