Manchester United are expected to focus on signing Valencia's midfielder Andre Gomes after Bayern Munich beat them in the battle for Benfica starlet Renato Sanches, according to Super Deporte. The Spanish publication claims that the potential appointment of Jose Mourinho could hold the key but added that La Liga outfit are not ready to negotiate his departure from Mestalla for less than €65m (£51.2m, $74m).

Bayern announced earlier on Tuesday (10 May) the signings of both Sanches and Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels in a sensational double deal which is expected to have a massive domino effect in the mercato.

United have been heavily linked with both Sanches and Gomes in recent months amid reports linking the former Chelsea boss with the Old Trafford job. Nevertheless, both midfielders share an agent - Jorge Mendes - with Mourinho and are considered two of the most promising talents from the homeland of the Portuguese tactician.

Daily Mirror reported earlier in March that United sent their scouts to watch both midfielders and Monaco star Bernardo Silva ahead of making a summer move for their services. Reports linking Gomes with a move to Old Trafford have since escalated following the decision of Sanchez to snub the Premier League giants for a move to the Bundesliga instead.

Super Deporte, only hours after the announcement, have reported that United are now ready to step up the pursuit for Gomes as a consequence – especially should Mourinho finally take over from Louis van Gaal at the end of the season.

Yet, the Valencia local publication claims that Gary Neville's former club are going to demand at least €65m to part ways with the 22-year-old midfielder as he has become one of the spearheads of the La Liga outfit since his arrival from Benfica in 2014.

Los Che already proved to United that they were a tough club to negotiate with last summer when Nico Otamendi was sold to Manchester City despite the fact that the Argentinian had been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer.

Meanwhile, Super Deporte also added that Borussia Dortmund are expected to make a move to replace Hummels with Valencia centre-back Mustafi, who had also been linked with Liverpool in recent times.
