Manchester United are reportedly set to make a £20m offer for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, according to the Express.

The Red Devils are in the market for defensive reinforcements to cover the departure of their two experienced defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Ferdinand has been released after his contract expired and club captain Vidic has left to join Inter Milan.

United are in need of a world-class centre-back and have been linked to the likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Stefan De Vrij, but the German defender is their number one target to fill in the vacancy.

Louis van Gaal has now decided that he will make one final push to land the defender and reportedly sanctioned a final take-it-or-leave-it offer of £20m to Dortmund. It is claimed that the United manager will not push forward if this deal is rejected by the Bundesliga outfit.

Hummels, who joined Dortmund initially on loan from Bayern Munich, later cost them just £3m and the club could make a tidy profit on the player. But the former Bundesliga champions look like they are unwilling to let any of their star players leave over the summer after already having lost Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer to the Bavarian Giants.

The 25-year-old defender is currently in Brazil with the German squad and is one of the key members of Joachim Low's team. He is the rock at the heart of the defence for the German team that is looking to win the World Cup for the first time in 24 years.

Hummels claims he is happy in Dortmund but has admitted that a move to United could appeal to him 'someday'. If his club accepts the fee, the German defender could be tempted to a move across to England and specifically to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils who have already wrapped up two big-money moves for midfielder Ander Herrera and left-back Luke Shaw will hope to conclude this deal, which will be a massive coup for them.
