Manchester United are reportedly set to make a late swoop for AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong. It is believed that the Serie A club are willing to part with the player for a fee of around £8m.

According to Goal, the Red Devils are looking at the Netherlands international after losing out on primary target Arturo Vidal, who confirmed that he will remain at Juventus for another season at least.

Louis van Gaal has been desperate to strengthen his midfield all through the summer and was linked with various players like Vidal and Kevin Strootman. United have been struggling in the opening matches of the season and the Dutchman is still looking for his first competitive win.

De Jong, who left Manchester City in 2012, was a key part of van Gaal's World Cup squad and the former Bayern Munich manager is keen to be reunited with his compatriot.

The Milan midfielder has been linked with a move away from the Serie A club all through the summer, with the report claiming that United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had spoken to his representatives earlier in the month.

Apart from United, Premier League rivals Arsenal were also keen on signing the midfielder earlier in the summer, with Arsene Wenger looking for a holding midfielder as a long-term replacement for Mikel Arteta.

The Old Trafford club have made their sixth signing of the summer, after it was confirmed that Ajax defender Daley Blind will be joining the club following his medical before the end of Monday's transfer window.

Blind is another Dutch player, who played under the United manager at the World Cup and apart from the left-wing back role he essayed for the national team, he can also play as a defensive midfielder.
