Manchester United have confirmed the capture of 16-year-old defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Eredivisie club Ajax.

"Manchester United agreed a deal to sign Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Ajax ahead of the transfer deadline," a statement on their official website read.

"The 16-year-old is a powerful defender who caught the eye at the AEGON Future Cup and is highly regarded in his homeland."

"Fosu-Mensah still requires an International Transfer Certificate to be processed in order to make his debut for Paul McGuinness' Academy squad, but his versatility and ability mark him out as an excellent addition for the Reds," the statement added.

The Dutch centre-back, who can also play as a full-back or in the midfield, has moved to Manchester for a fee in the region of £300,000 and is set to join the United academy squad for the season.

It is claimed that he has completed his medical at their Carrington training base and will be unveiled once the International Transfer Certificate is processed.

The young Dutchman is highly regarded in his homeland, and following the big money moves of Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Luke Shaw and Ander Herrera, Fosu-Mensah is one for the future.

Meanwhile, former United defender Paul Parker has launched an astonishing attack on the Red Devils' captain Wayne Rooney by branding him 'awful'.

"As for Wayne Rooney, he's been awful. There he was at Burnley this weekend, supposedly captaining the team - but I saw a player interested only in himself, doing nothing to try and lift his game or inspire his team-mates," Parker said, as quoted by the Express.

"The only thing in any way remarkable about his performance is that he collects £300,000 a week to play that badly."

"Once Van Persie is fully-fit again, Rooney must be the person to be dropped from United's new attacking line-up: for me, it'll be RVP and Falcao every time," the TV pundit added.
