Kick-off is at 8pm BST. Live coverage of the match is available on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 1 HD. Radio commentary of the game will be available on BBC Radio 5 Live.

Overview

Jose Mourinho was appointed United manager in May as he replaced Louis van Gaal. He took charge in July and is yet to manage his first official game at Old Trafford, which will be achieved on Friday evening.

The former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager has added four new faces to the squad this summer, including the world-record signing of Paul Pogba, who rejoined the Red Devils. The France international will start from the bench for the second league match of the season.

In the previous fixture, United registered a comfortable 3-1 victory over Bournemouth. Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were all on the scoresheet as Mourinho saw his side clinch their first three points.

United will be hoping that they can start their first home match of the season with another win. One thing Mourinho will be looking forward to is keeping a clean sheet and the return of Chris Smalling should boost their chances.

Southampton, on the other hand, started the season with a 1-1 draw against Watford at the St Mary's Stadium. Etienne Capoue gave his side an early lead in the ninth minute, which was cancelled by Nathan Redmond's second half goal.

The Saints are also under the guidance of a new manager, Claude Puel. He replaced Ronaldo Koeman as the latter moved to Everton to fill the vacancy following the sacking of Roberto Martinez.

What managers say

Antonio Conte: "With Paul it's a bit the same – he hasn't played in one single minute of any pre-season matches but has done almost two weeks of work with us, sometimes with the group, sometimes separately, and he is okay now to play some minutes."

Claude Puel: "There is no problem with Jose [Fonte], it is just strange that this rumour comes just before the game at United. There is a possibility that he may travel with us to Old Trafford."
