Overview

United come into the game after a 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town in the third round of the Capital One Cup. Wayne Rooney opened the score before Andreas Pereira doubled the lead from a free-kick. Anthony Martial scored the third goal, his fourth in four matches, to make sure Louis van Gaal registered his first win in the competition. They face Middlesbrough in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.

Sunderland have not enjoyed a great run in the Premier League this season. They have not won any of the league matches and have collected only two points so far. Their form is a matter of concern for manager Dick Advoocat. The Black Cats were eliminated from the Capital One Cup following their 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Premier League leaders. It is going to be a tough task for Sunderland to pick up three points against United at Old Trafford.

What managers say

Louis van Gaal: "No, no, because I have said that Wayne shall score sooner or later. It was a fantastic goal (against Ipswich Town), the most beautiful goal of the evening."

Dick Advocaat: "I am not as negative as you might expect," he said. "Of course, I was not happy with three of the goals we gave away. I will not name names but everyone could see the mistakes. But the way we played in the first 25 minutes was very positive and I was pleased with our commitment in the second half."
