Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has heaped praise on Luke Shaw and has backed the left-back to get more opportunities after his impressive display in the Red Devils' 2-1 Champions League win over CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford on 5 December.

The England international was handed a first start when the former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager started him on the left wing-back position. He won the club's man of the match award, voted by fans.

Prior to the first start against CSKA Moscow, Shaw made two substitute appearances. Both of them came in the Carabao Cup fixtures against Burton Albion and Swansea City. In his pre-match press conference, Mourinho said the former Southampton defender "deserves" an opportunity.

The 20-time English champions' coach stressed that he is happy with Shaw's performance. With a busy schedule in December, the 22-year-old could get more playing time to shine at United.

"A very positive performance, especially with the balls going forward. Creating a lot, great intensity in his game. It was no surprise that in 80 minutes he's feeling the consequences of that intensity; it's normal as it's the first match of the season for him. But he's going to get more," Mourinho was quoted as saying by United's official website.

"He was waiting for quite a long time, he was deserving [of his chance] for quite a long time. It's not easy to give an opportunity to a player who doesn't play for many months in matches where the team really needs [a] result."

"I wanted to make changes but changes in players that need a change and not spend a change on Luke. But he managed on for 90 minutes and really I told him this is not the best, this is just an opportunity for you to play and to improve your level. Honestly, I am happy with his performance."

Shaw has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford after failing to cement a place in the starting XI. IBTimes UK revealed in November that the full-back is not focusing on the rumours surrounding his future and is targeting to regain his place at United.

IBTimes UK also revealed last month that Shaw's focus was to impress Mourinho. His performance against CSKA Moscow has seen him earn praise from his manager and he will now focus on starting more matches for United.

A win over CSKA Moscow means United finish on top of Group A with 15 points after six games, three points ahead of second place FC Basel. The Red Devils will host Manchester City in the derby clash at home. Shaw will be hoping to start against Pep Guardiola's side on 10 December.
