Mark Bridger, the 46-year-old arrested in connection with the abduction of missing April Jones, has now been arrested on suspicion of the five-year-old's murder.

April disappeared around 7 pm on Monday evening, and it has now emerged that Mr Bridger attended school parents' evening with the five-year-old's parents, Paul and Coral Jones, just hours before she disappeared.

Bridger remains in custody for questioning at Aberystwyth police station, though officers have stressed that the search for April remains.

DS Reg Bevan announced Bridger had been arrested, and that volunteer efforts were no longer needed.

"Mark Bridger has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of April Jones.

"The arrest does not detract from our efforts to find April and we remain committed to finding her."

"The dynamics of the search have now changed and due to the passage of time and the developments within the investigation it is no longer appropriate for us to expect untrained members of the public to continue the search."

"We only require professional searchers to be involved in the on-going search in and around Machynlleth."

Police have now searched Bridger's three-bedroom cottage a few miles north of where April went missing. In this photo here, forensic experts can be seen moving paving slabs from outside the property.
