Liverpool target Martin Montoya is set to commit his future to Barcelona, even though his contract expires next June.

Montoya will be able to leave the Catalan side on a free transfer this summer but recent reports claimed that Liverpool are keen to agree a cut-price deal in January to secure his services, and bolster a defence that is short on numbers after Jose Enrique's injury.

Reports have claimed that Brendan Rodgers' side have already opened talks with Montoya's agent and that the player was considering Liverpool's offer.

However, the Spaniard has denied that he wants to leave Barcelona and he explained that the report suggested that only because Cristian Tello said that he was willing to move to play more regularly.

"I did not say anything. The press reported that we [Tello and Montoya] wanted to quit Barcelona but it is not true. I have already said that I have spent the last 14 years here and despite my contract expiring in a few months, it is almost certain that I am going to renew," Montoya told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

"I hope to be at Barcelona many years and I never said that I want to leave. It is normal that a player wants to play more but if there is the chance to do that at Barcelona, at the team of my life, it would be much better," he added.

Montoya has recently become an important player for manager Gerardo Martino and although he started the season on the bench he has made the starting line-up in the last five La Liga games.

"I am very happy for the opportunities that the boss has given me recently. I have been in the starting line-up in the last games and I have to take advantage of these opportunities to continue playing. I have to win my place in the line-up on the pitch and in the training sessions."

The 22-year-old is predominantly right-sided but he can also play on the left flank. He was part of the Spain Under-21 team that conquered the European Championship last summer and Spanish manager Vicente Del Bosque is considering him for the next summer's World Cup.

In the last few weeks, the player has been also linked to Napoli and Arsenal.
