The Met Gala has a reputation for being the Oscars of the East Coast and when 800 of the most glamorous celebrities congregate at one place, it is difficult to argue with that remark.

The 2012 Costume Institute Benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City saw a range fo colours and hues, from shocking pink to shades of grey, as celebrities took to wearing everything from long gowns to short frocks. The event paid tribute to Miuccia Prada for the launch of Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

"Amber Heard dusted the red carpet in Zac Posen, Julianne Hough shone bright in fuchsia and Chelsea Clinton wowed in bright coral. Karlie Kloss wears Jason Wu, Emily Blunt in cut-out Calvin Klein, and Emma Stone turned heads in Lanvin. Coco Rocha wore a bright pink top under her Givenchy pant suit, Sarah Jessica Parker donned pink flowers on her Valentino dress, actress Paula Patton opted for pale Vera Wang, while Girls star Allison Williams decided on magenta in Ralph Lauren. Paying homage to Miuccia Prada, Mad Men's Jessica Pare wore L'Wren Scott, Cery Mulligan wore Prada, Lana De Rey was dressed in custom Altuzarra and Jessica Alba sparkled in Michael Kors," the Daily Mail said, describing the celebrities and their attire.

"There's a real feeling of surrealism. I feel a little bit trippy," Billy Norwich of Vogue, who co-hosted the event, said. The huge turnout this year has made it possible to raise over £600,000 for the Costume Institute.

Model Karolina Kurkova stunned the audience with a bright glittery gown while January Jones turned up in a bright yellow Versace. Sofia Vergara looked elegant in a grey Marchesa and Cery Mulligan looked cute in a short glittery Prada. A look at the pictures will tell you it is impossible to judge the best dressed or the most beautiful woman of the evening.
