Federer progressed into the quarterfinal of the Sony Open Tennis ousting Richard Gasquet in the fourth round on Tuesday. The former world number one allowed no room for surprises to defeat the Frenchman, 6-1, 6-2, within 50 minutes.
The Swiss' next opponent in the tournament will be 20th seed Kei Nishikori, who upset world number four David Ferrer in the fourth round after a long gruelling battle lasting over three hours.
The Japanese clinched the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7), but the Spaniard bounced back in the following set taking it with a, 6-2, scoreline to force a third set. The deciding set gave rise to a sparkling contest between the two but Nishikori managed to save four match points before ultimately emerging triumphant, 7-6 (9), in the tiebreaker.
Federer has set his eyes on the coveted trophy, as the 17-time Grand Slam winner is yet to drop a single set in Miami this year. The 32-year-old will be keen to continue his fine form against Nishikori, who will be hoping to cause yet another upset in the tournament.
The winner of this quarterfinal clash has a tougher hurdle to overcome in the next round with defending champion Andy Murray or world number two Novak Djokovic awaiting them in the semi-final.
Federer and Nishikori are tied 1-1 in overall meetings. They have never faced each other in any Grand Slam event.
