Overview

Entering the competition directly in the second round with a bye, Federer secured his progress to the third round after defeating the 53rd rank, Ivo Karlovic in his previous match on Friday.

The former world number one took the first set, 6-4, but was stretched to play a tiebreaker in the second set before winning, 7-6 (4), securing his progress at the Croatian's expense in one hour and 15 minutes.

Entering the tournament through qualifiers, De Bakker defeated Romania's Victor Hanescu, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round before pulling off an upset by ousting world number 29, Fernando Verdasco in the second round.

The Dutchman won the first set after a closely contested battle in the tiebreaker, 7-6(4). But, Verdasco bounced back in the second set winning, 7-6 (3), forcing the game into a third set. De Bakker held his nerve and dispatched the Spaniard with relative ease in the deciding set to win, 6-2, thus progressing to the next round.

Federer didn't play in the competition last year due to a back injury but suffered an exit in the third round of this tournament in 2012. The two-time victor in Miami will be relatively more confident and will look to wrap up the game as quickly as he can.
