Microsoft has announced that the Lamborghini Centenario sports car will be the cover star of this year's entry into the Xbox-exclusive Forza racing series. It is widely expected that the next game will be Forza Horizon 3, as the series continues its now-annual release schedule.

The car has been made to celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of Lamborghini founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, and was revealed to the public at the Geneva Motor Show yesterday (1 March). Only 40 Centenarios have been made. Priced at €1.75 million (£1.4m) before tax, it has already sold out.

The Xbox trailer shows off the car (it's unclear whether the car is an in-game rendering or a picture of the real thing) and promises more information at Microsoft's E3 media briefing, which is likely to take place on Monday 13 June.

Yesterday it was revealed that last year's Forza Motorsport 6 is coming to PC this Spring in a stripped down free-to-play form. Developers Turn 10 also revealed that "all Forza games moving forward" will be jointly developed for both Xbox One and PC – as part of Microsoft's efforts to capitalise on the PC market.

Forza Motorsport 6's cover star was the 2017 Ford GT, which made an appearance at last year's Microsoft E3 press conference.
