Preview:

Gamescom 2015 should belong to Microsoft and the Xbox One. Sony are absent because, honestly, it don't really need to turn up, leaving competitors with a near-open stage all to themselves. They have prepared for it too, saving three major exclusives specifically for the event taking place in Cologne, Germany.

Crackdown (it won't be entitled Crackdown 3) is the long-awaited threequel to Realtime Worlds's super-powered open-world classic, and will be the star of the show. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also promised a first look at gameplay footage.

Remedy's Quantum Break will also be there, showing off what will hopefully be a near-final look at the game first revealed at the Xbox One launch event in 2013. A release date is also expected to be announced.

Finally, there will be Scalebound from Platinum Games, which, like the new Crackdown, was first announced at Microsoft's E3 2014 show and hasn't been seen since. The game promises enormous dragons and... well, that's about it so far.

Those three will make up the bulk of Microsoft's show, with big winter exclusives Rise of the Tomb Raider and Halo 5: Guardians also likely to feature in some way.
