Police searching for missing vet Catherine Gowing have discovered human remains in a shallow pool in Sealand, North Wales.

Irish-born Gowing has been missing since 12 October. She was last seen leaving a supermarket near her home in New Brighton, Flintshire.

Her burnt-out car was found burnt out near a disused quarry in Alltami a mile away.

The body has not been formally identified. A post mortem examination will be held.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "Search team officers [have] discovered human remains in a shallow pool within the field known locally as the Lum.

"Those remains have yet to be formally identified as this will require medical as well as forensic examination. Catherine Gowing's family have been informed of this distressing development.

"I would ask that they be allowed privacy to come to terms with this news."

Clive Sharp, 46, has been charged with the murder of Gowing, who is originally from Clonlee, County Offaly. He has been remanded in custody until 7 January.
