The year 2014 has been eventful for television, as many shows ended their year-long journey while some of the ongoing series delivered twists that left fans shell-shocked.

IBTimes UK has compiled a list of deaths in popular TV series that were widely discussed on the internet.

How I Met Your Mother

The TV series' finale episode left fans in tears, when it aired Ted Mosby's wife [the Mother in the title of the show] dead.

Ted took almost nine years to narrate the story of how he met his children's mother, but in the finale, viewers learnt that his wife was actually dead, and he was seen standing outside Robin's apartment waiting to propose to her.

Sons of Anarchy

After seven long years of violence, sex and tender emotions, Sons of Anarchy ended its final ride on an emotional high.

The show's protagonist Jax Teller finally learns the truth of his wife Tara's death and kills his own mother Gemma.

But this wasn't the only shocking death in the final series of Kurt Sutter's biker drama. The show ended its seven-year journey in the most poignant way possible, when Jax sacrifices his own life to make his children's life secure.

The HBO fantasy series's season 4 has been the most shocking series until now, as almost all fan-favourite characters of the show have been killed.

The show started with the infamous Purple Wedding leading to the death of the sadist King Joffrey. Fans always wanted Cersei's incestuous son dead and rightly the episode was a major topic of discussion on the internet.

With the slogan 'All Men Must Die', Joffrey's death was just the beginning. The shocking and brutal death of Prince Oberyn in GOT's episode 8 left fans in distress.

The Mountain killed the Red Viper (Oberyn) by gouging his eyes in a bloody battle, which was sickening - even by Game of Thrones standards.

The Arrow midseason finale left fans in suspense as Oliver Queen was killed in a battle between him and Ra's Al Ghul.

In the superhero series, Sara Lance was also killed before Oliver's death.

The Assassin's leader delivers a final strike driving his sword through Oliver's rib cage, and pushes the Green Arrow over the cliff. In the last scene Oliver is seen falling off the cliff, and the episode ends.

It is not yet clear whether Arrow is dead or alive, but the episode was one of the most shocking moments of the year.

The Good Wife

The Good Wife took a disastrous turn when the show's creators killed Will Gardener in season 5. The lead character of the show was shot dead during a courtroom scene when the character of Josh Charles was killed by his client who was mentally disturbed.

Fans vented their ire for Gardener's death on the show's creators who later released a public statement pacifying heart-broken fans.

AMC's zombie horror thriller is popular for the gory series, but what can one expect from a land where hungry dead people with rotting skin and flesh are walking around to feed on someone.

During the midseason finale of The Walking Dead, a fan-favourite character, Beth Greene, was killed.

Her tragic death ended all possibilities of a romantic triangle between Daryl Dixon, Carol and Beth.

Fans were disappointed after the death as her character was one of the few who still had faith in humanity.
