Practice Review

Valentino Rossi rolled backed the years to win his sixth Australian Grand Prix last Sunday, while Britain's Bradley Smith had to make do with third position. It was an unlikely victory for the Italian, who had only managed to cross the finishing line on top owing to an unfortunate crash by Marc Marquez in lap 18.

Marquez had already won the world championship after finishing second at Motegi but retaining the title was scant reward for the ambitious 21-year-old. Rossi's teammate Jorge Lorenzo finished third and has proved himself to be a budding superstar on the track. The Spaniard led Free Practice 2 on Friday, clocking a brilliant 2m 14.503s, .242 seconds ahead of the onrushing Marquez.

Rossi failed to live up to his billing and finished in 15th spot, a performance which the 35-year-old will be looking to improve on in qualifying. Honda claimed the third spot with Dani Pedrosa, while Ducati and NGM claimed the fourth and fifth spot respectively.
