The MTV Video Music Awards are back and this time it's the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Grimes (Claire Boucher) and Rachel Antonoff will be hosting the Red carpet report of the 26th MTV VMA on 25 August and pop icon Lady Gaga will kick-start the festivities with her Applause performance.

"I am hard pressed to leave my studio at such a creative time of year, but deep in my heart I must know if Macklemore went to the thrift shop for his red carpet look. Also stoked to be joined by co host Rachel Antonoff, cuz I would be terrified to do this alone haha," Grimes stated.

"I couldn't be more excited to be co-hosting this and so excited to be doing it with Grimes, she is the coolest! I'm thinking of wearing a long floral skirt with matching bra top but we need to secure the closure first so people don't get a big (tiny) show," Antonoff said.

The nominees were announced via short clips through the huge MTV campaign, #RoadtotheVMAs.

Twitter, Instagram and Vine have been made full use of by MTV for the campaign which has already garnered more than 500,000 likes on Instagram, 48.5 million impressions on Twitter, nearly 40 million impressions on Facebook, and more than one million impressions on Tumblr.

Instagram also has snap shots of the Video Music Awards' Moonman statue travelling from last year's venue, the Staples Center, to this year's venue. That's not all, MTV News reporters Sway Calloway, Christina Garibaldi, and James Montgomery will shoot the guests with questions submitted by fans from across the world. The fans can use the hashtag #AskVMA on Twitter, Vine, and Instagram and submit their questions.

It also looks like boy band One Direction is the hot favourite for Best Song of the Summer category. While the tallies for a majority of the award show's categories are unavailable to the public, One Direction has already dominated one of the two visible categories with their blockbuster single, Best Song Ever.

As of now, One Direction is in first place with more than 5.5 million votes. Pop star Miley Cyrus came in second with 3.4 million votes.
