Mulholland Drive - 2001
Laura Elena Harring in David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, voted the best film of the 21st century Universal Focus

David Lynch's Mulholland Drive has officially been named the greatest film of the 21st century, following the recent results of a poll conducted by BBC Culture which asked 177 film critics from 36 countries what they thought were the best films from the past 16 years.

The intoxicating film, which wowed reviewers when it came out in 2001, topped the list, despite being known for polarising audiences with its unconventional yet uniquely stylistic storytelling. In The Mood For Love, There Will Be Blood, Spirited Away and Richard Linklater's Boyhood were named runners-up.

Interestingly, Mulholland Drive was Lynch's only entry in the entire 100 titles, as opposed to the likes of filmmakers such Wes Anderson, Terrence Malick, Todd Haynes, David Fincher, Ang Lee, Lars von Trier, Steve McQueen, Kathryn Bigelow, Richard Linklater and Wes Anderson; all of whom had two movies in the list.

Directors Paul Thomas Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Apitchatpong Weerasethakul and the Coen brothers had three pictures eachin the final 100. Like Lynch, Martin Scorsese, Baz Luhrmann, Quentin Tarantino, Roman Polanski and Steven Spielberg were among those with just one movie making the cut.

Last year's best picture Academy Award winner Spotlight came in at 88th, having just been beaten by Amélie, Far From Heaven, A Prophet, Her and Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence consecutively before that. Brooklyn, which was also in the 2015 Oscar race, made the 48th slot.

While many of the titles listed steered clear of 'mainstream cinema,' hugely-popular blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy was named as the 19th best film of the year. Similarly, Disney Pixar animations Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Inside Out and Wall-E came in at 96, 93, 41 and 29 respectively.
