A New Jersey police lieutenant has been arrested after he was allegedly caught by staff in his local branch of Starbucks with his shorts down, pleasuring himself under a table.

Even more embarrassingly, Benito Gonzales Jr had his CCTV image circulated by local police as they attempted to identify the flasher.

Gonzales's boss, Camden County Police Chief, Scott Thomson, said the police officer had been "removed from duty". He added that his department was "deeply troubled by the allegations of this off-duty conduct".

Lieutenant Gonzales is currently being investigated by his law enforcement colleagues and is due to appear at a court hearing on 4 June.

Prior to his suspension, the veteran police officer had enjoyed a successful 17-year career and was leading a small narcotics unit.

According to his department's website, he was given an award in October for meritorious service to the police.
