Day One of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week kicked off in New York, as fashionistas and trend setters were treated to a glimpse of the 2014 Fall/Winter runway looks.

BCBGMAXAZRIA opened the event making a bold statement, with fur dominating the runway.

The svelte models were engulfed by oversized fur coats, hoods and trims that exuded Dr. Zhivago inspired glamour and opulence.

Fur accessories were ubiquitous in the Nicholas K show, with fur hoods and headpieces matched in stark contrast, with deep cut blouses, and low-cut pants, slung precariously below the hipbone.

Richard Chai's collection saw the models covered up in menswear-inspired layers and roomy jackets.

And while a dark colour palette inevitably dominated the runaway, there were bright pops of sunshine yellow and cool mint in the Creatures of the Wind show.

The show, which is traditionally dominated by U.S. designers led by Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, will also feature emerging talents this season from Europe, Asia and, for the first time, Australia.
