Where to Watch Live

Kick-off is set for 4pm BST. Live coverage is on Sky Sports 1 and Sky Sports 1 HD. Radio commentary of the game will be available on BBC Radio 5 Live. Catch the highlights of the game on Match of the Day on BBC One and BBC One HD at 10:30pm BST.

Overview

Newcastle United welcome reigning champions Manchester City, whom they have lost to in their last nine league meetings, to St James' Park for their opening game of the Premier League season.

Alan Pardew has strengthened his team over the summer and they do look like a much stronger outfit compared to last season. The Tyneside club have not lost their opening Premier League fixture in nine seasons, but the odds of that record remaining will be low.

Pardew is welcoming a team that has not had a great pre-season, and are also licking their wounds after the 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manchester City will hope to continue where they left off last season, when they recorded consecutive wins in their last five league matches. The Citizens will also be keen to wipe off last week's loss to Arsenal and start their Premier League campaign on a high.

Manuel Pellegrini will still be without a few key players in Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, who are both injured and new signing Eliaquim Managala may not be able to start due to lack of fitness.

However, they still have a strong squad, and other new arrivals Bacary Sagna, Frank Lampard and Fernando will all be in contention for a starting place.
