Millions of Nigerians are celebrating the 55th anniversary of the country's independence, which marks the end of British colonial rule in territories that form modern-day Nigeria. Events to mark this occasion, which falls on 1 October, are taking place not only in Nigeria but in countries such as the UK and the US, where large numbers of Nigerian migrants live. IBTimes UK has compiled a list of events to mark the 55th independence day in the UK.

Huddersfield: Thursday 1 October, from 5.15pm at Nigerian Students Society (NSS)

The event is free and features guest speakers from Nigeria and the UK. It is advised to arrive at the event in advance.

London: 55th Independence Celebration, Thursday 1 October, from 8pm till 4am at The Planet Nollywood SE5 OHQ

The event will be hosted by DjAde Ade and features live performances of several artists including Solek. Food is also available and access to the bar is free before midnight.

London: Nigeria Independence Day party, Friday 2 October, from 9pm till 4am at Socialite Bar N10 2QR

Tickets are £11.49, however the event is free until midnight for ladies on the guest list. The event features singers such as Anthony Everest and Ali Bongo as well as several DJs including DJ Abrantee.

London: The Biggest Nigerian 55th Independence Dance Party, Friday 2 October, from 10pm till 4.30am at iCan Studio E3 2PR

Guests will pay £20 for standard tickets or £50 for VIP tickets that offer tables, light refreshments and the possibility to skip the queue. There are three rooms with live music featuring several Djs including DutchDaDon and DJ MixMaster J.

There will be also an Afrobeat dance competition and tributes to Nigerian singers including Afrobeat musician and human rights activist Fela Kuti.

London: Celebrating Nigerian Independence, Friday 2 October, from 8pm till 2am at CC Lounge Bar SE1 6TJ

The event is free until 10pm, £5 after. DJ Naija Boi will be performing to commemorate the independence.

London: Nigeria Independence Party, Friday 2 October, from 10pm to 4am at La Lounge E16 2AB

The event features several Djs including DJ Era and DJ Ribi. The dress code is: Classic Men and High Society Ladies.

Cardiff: Official Nigeria Independence Party, Friday 2 October, from 10pm till 4 am at Room 112 Cardiff

Tickets before midnight for people on the guestlist are £10. The event features several DJs including DJ JAM JAM. The dress code is smart and people wearing trainers and hoodies will be not allowed in the venue. It is possible to reserve tables.
