American actor/model Ian Somerhalder reportedly asked former girlfriend and The Vampire Diaries co-star Nina Dobrev, not to quit the supernatural show.

The 26-year-old Canadian actress/model, who plays Elena Gilbert on The CW drama had confirmed her exit on Instagram.

Dearest TVD Family, I've just spent the most beautiful weekend on Lake Lanier in Georgia with my own TVD Family, the cast and crew of The Vampire Diaries. I want to be the first to tell you that it wasn't just a holiday celebration, it was a goodbye party. I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May. Elena fell in love not once, but twice, with two epic soulmates, and I myself made some of the best friends I'll ever know and built an extended family I will love forever. According to Hollywood Life, Somerhalder tried his best to convince Dobrev to stay back on the show.

"Ian met with Nina and pretty much begged her not to leave," a source said. "Although her leaving does make things easier for him personally, he knows how important Nina is to the show. The Vampire Diaries worked because of the chemistry and tension between him, Nina and Paul [Wesley]. The love triangle was what fans responded to. Without Nina, Ian is very concerned with the direction the show will take."

"She wasn't going to budge," the insider added. "Now, Ian's concerned the show is a sinking ship and is looking to make his own exit."

Dobrev and Somerhalder dated for more than three years, before splitting in May 2013.

Following their break-up, Somerhalder moved on with Twilight star Nikki Reed. The two were first romantically linked last year in July after they were spotted shopping at the Farmer's Market in Los Angeles.

Later, the 36-year-old actor confirmed their relationship on Instagram when he lashed out at a few of his fans for bashing Reed.

It was previously reported that Dobrev was devastated over the engagement news.
