Sporting Lisbon are yet to receive any offers for William Carvalho despite reports of an opening bid from Arsenal.

Arsene Wenger has strengthened key areas of his side this summer having added Calum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy, David Ospina and Alexis Sanchez to his squad but the club are still in search of a formidable presence in midfield.

Carvalho has emerged as a possible target after the Gunners boss played down talk of a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, whose reported wages of £150,000 a week are thought to be a stumbling block in any potential move.

The 20-year-old Sporting midfielder has a release clause of £37m but could be allowed to leave the Portuguese giants for a fee closer to £24m.

However, Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho insists the club have not been contacted over a move for the Portugal international, but admitted something could yet happen before the transfer window closes.

"For William Carvalho nothing has arisen yet," A Bola reported him as saying at a press conference.

De Carvalho also spoke of Argentine defender Marcos Rojo who is being targeted by Southampton. But while confirming there had been offers for the 24-year-old, the club president was dismissive of early attempts to lure the player away from the Estadio Alvalade.

He added: "There is still a month [to go], but these early approaches have shown that I do not think the clubs are even interested in the players concerned. Nor are we interested in selling."

Carvalho was closely linked with a move to Manchester United throughout last season. Former boss David Moyes sanctioned a number of scouting trips to see the youngster in action as he enjoyed his breakout campaign in Portugal's top flight, but the club's interest cooled following the appointment of Louis van Gaal.

The midfielder announced after Portugal's dismal World Cup campaign that he may consider leaving his club this summer.

"Will I stay at Sporting? I don't know. I'm going back to Portugal and then we will see," Carvalho told Maisfutebol.
