North Korea's state-run television KRT on Monday (March 18) showed middle school graduates in Kaesong city signing up to join the North Korean People's Army (KPA).

According to the North's official news agency, KCNA, the number of young people who volunteered to join or rejoin the KPA has reached more than one million.

State television broadcast pictures of young North Koreans marching down the streets of Pyongyang near Kim Il-sung Square, while singing wartime songs, amid high tension in the Korean peninsula.

The North has threatened a nuclear war with the United States in response to new United Nations sanctions over its latest nuclear test.

It also vowed to strike back at South Korea and the United States for conducting joint military drills, which they see as rehearsals for war.
