Overview

World number one Novak Djokovic for once in a long time came into a tournament under pressure with the top ranking spot in balance, but the Serb showed just why he is considered to be one of the best players in recent history cruising past Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Masters on 2 November (Wednesday).

The past few months have not been very good for the Serb, who has suffered from a loss and form and injuries. However, Djokovic put that behind and put in an impressive performance against the big serving Muller.

While Djokovic does look a little tired, he comes into this clash as the favourite to progress to the quarter-final and look to defend his title.

His opponent on the day, world number 18 Grigor Dimitrov has been in decent form and is looking to reach his third Masters 1000 Series quarter final of 2016. Despite his improvement over time, the Bulgarian still lacks consistency, something which could hurt him when he squares up to Djokovic.

Dimitrov has beaten the Serb once in the past, way back in 2013 and will need to play out of his skin if he has to emerge victorious against the world number one come Thursday.
