Overview

World No 1 Djokovic comes into the clash targeting a record 30th ATP Masters 1000 title and a fourth Canadian Masters championship. The Serb, who suffered one of the biggest upsets in his career at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships when he lost to Sam Querrey in the third round, has looked more like himself, cruising past opponents without having to shift to top gear.

With fellow members of the "The Big Four' in Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer missing due to various factors, the tournament is Djokovic's to lose. Barring Wimbledon, the Serb is still on course to complete one of the most successful seasons in history, having already won the Australian, Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and French Open titles.

Ranked No 8 in the world, Berdych has had a disappointing 2016 season so far. He is yet to beat a player in the top10 and has not reached the final of any tournament.

Although Berdych has been one of the best performers on the ATP circuit over the past decade, he struggles against top-notch opposition because of his lack of range.

Head-to-head

The duo have faced each other 26 times in Grand Slam and ATP Tour history in the past with Djokovic winning 24 of the encounters. They last faced off in the quarter-final of the 2016 French Open with the Serb winning in straight sets.

Djokovic and Berdych will be facing each other for the first time at the Rogers Cup.
