American boy band 'N Sync have joined Twitter ahead of their rumoured MTV Video Music Awards reunion.

"Mic check, mic check one.. two… is this thing on?!" the band wrote for their first tweet.

The band members - Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick will reportedly perform at the event to be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on 25 August.

"They will reenact some of their greatest videos in a medley," a source told Us Weekly, "Then Justin will sing his new song 'Take Back the Night' and get his [Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award]."

In a recent SiriusXM radio show Dirty Pop With Lance Bass, the 34-year-old singer neither confirmed nor denied the band's reunion.

"It's amazing to see the reaction out there on Twitter and social media [and] how many people are supporting 'N Sync," he said, "It's so nice to see because when we ended things [over] 10 years ago, there was no social media, there was no Twitter, but it's so cute to see how many people are supporting [us], and 'N Sync was even trending."

The group's last televised performance came at the 2003 Grammy Awards, with a tribute to the Bee Gees.

Meanwhile, Timberlake shared a photo of his glittering shoes on Instagram with the caption: "Counting down to the VMAs."

Pop icon Lady Gaga will open the awards ceremony with the live performance of Applause. The big night will also feature performances by Drake, Katy Perry, Kanye West, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
