U.S. President Barack Obama travelled to University of Colorado Hospital in Colorado to meet with the traumatised victims of the gunman James Holmes who killed 12 people and wounded 58 more in a Denver-area cinema.

Mr Obama's visit comes a day after police cleared James Holmes's flat of explosives which could have killed people entering via the door.

After Mr Obama's visit thousands of people gathered for an evening memorial service to remember the victims of Colorado's shooting that shocked the nation . Bishop D Conley led prayers and thoughts for the Aurora congregation

24 year old Holmes is due to make his initial appearance before a judge at the Arapahoe County Justice Centre this morning. He has been held in solitary confinement for his own security since his arrest immediately after carrying out his attack on Friday. It is still unclear what the motive for the attack was.
