Outlander season 2
Tobias Menzies as Black Jack Randall in Outlander Starz

Claire and Jamie Fraser came face-to-face with their nemesis Black Jack Randall in the 7 May episode of Outlander season 2. Tobias Menzies who plays Jonathan Randall spoke about his character's obsession with Jamie Fraser.

Menzies told Entertainment Weekly, "I don't think he hates Jamie. I think he is stimulated by him, intrigued by him. I think in some way Jamie represents everything that Jack isn't, and you both love and want to destroy the thing that you can't be. "

According to the actor, Randall finds Jamie to be a remarkable person. He said, "As someone who is interested in pain and people's pain thresholds, he flogs Jamie and Jamie is able to withstand more punishment than he's ever administered to anyone. So I think he finds Jamie to be a remarkable person. Yes, he's twisted, but it's a sort of rugged, weird respect."

There is a lot of speculation on Black Jack's sexuality, as he raped Jamie in season 1. When asked if Black Jack is gay, Menzies explained, "He isn't really a study in homosexuality. That wasn't really the thing, and I'm not sure Jack would describe himself as a homosexual. "

"I think sexuality wasn't as clearly defined as it is now. I made the decision that it wasn't a love story about Jack's love for Jamie, that it was more an exploration of his sadism, and in Jamie he finds someone who is a remarkable foil and a remarkable opponent in his journey as a sadist, rather than about a love story between the two of them," he added.

Outlander season 2 airs on Saturdays at 9pm ET/PT on Starz Network.
