Ouya Raises $8.5m on KickStarter and Announces Deal with Namco Bandai

Ouya, the Android-based games console that has taken crowd-funding website KickStarter by storm, will be partnering with game developer Namco Bandi Games, bringing titles like Pac-Man, Tekken and Ridge Racer.

Ouya's KickStarter listing has just ended, raising a total of $8,596,475 (£4.5m) from 63,416 backers, with 12 backers pledging more than $10,000 each, while the most popular sum was $99, which will earn each of the 46,124 backers at this level an Ouya console before it goes on general sale.

Ouya has already announced a partnership with on-demand gaming service OnLive and Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix.

Ouya boss Julie Uhrman said in a final update to the KickStarter page: "Lots of you have asked for more details on the games that Ouya will support at launch. After all, we are a game console, it makes sense that we'd be talking games.

"We've purposely been pretty tight lipped about our launch slate, but throughout our Kickstarter run, we've been having some exciting conversations behind the scenes."

Carlson Choi, vice president of marketing at Namco Bandai said that the games company and Ouya "are currently in active discussions to bring some of the world's biggest gaming properties to the exciting new open gaming platform.

"Namco Bandai brings with it a rich history of iconic gaming franchises, from classics like Pac-Man and Galaga, to seminal franchises like Tekken and Ridge Racer, and we're excited to explore how we can work with Ouya to bring some great titles to the forthcoming console."

Uhrman also announced that the Ouya console - which will be the size of a Rubik's cube when it goes on sale next year - will support up to four controllers, and backers can increase their donation by $30 for each extra gamepad they want.

Additionally, the Plex media application will also be supported by Ouya when it goes on sale, and Uhrman has confirmed that the console will have the names of 2,500 backers engraved into it.

Finally, Uhrman has again said that 600 developers who donated at least $699 each will receive a first-run Ouya ready to develop on this December, while the Ouya is expected to come to market in March 2013.
